Holiday Cheer

Things are feeling festive here at Bloomsbury Park Flowers!  Our string lights are up and the shop is fully stocked with rustic birch candles, vases in cheerful holiday colors, and all kinds of seasonal plants: Delicate Hellebores, deep red Amaryllis, Cyclamen in shocking pink, and fragrant Paper Whites planted with moss in birch vessels.

Flowers and plants have a way of lifting our spirits as the weather gets colder.  They add splashes of scent and color to our rooms and heighten our sense of home as haven.  We hope to see you in the shop soon!

Exciting New Vessels for the Holiday Season

Autumn has officially arrived!  Here at Bloomsbury Park flowers, we’re “falling” in love with some gorgeous new additions to our vessel collection.

The new arrivals include the petite, gold “Jenny” vase (also available in silver).

We envision the “Jenny” vase as excellent seasonal accent vessel for a side table, entrance, or powder room arrangement.

We’re also introducing two new vases that are real statement pieces. First, we have the silver mercury “Milk Jug” vase:

The “Milk Jug” vase would be stunning placed on a mantle, or as a centerpiece for a holiday party.  Next, we have the sleek “Chaz” vase, which can also be used as a planter:

The “Chaz” vase doubles as an elegant centerpiece vessel, or as a container for graceful orchids and other plants.

Finally, we’re currently also featuring rustic “Hobnail” jars.

These jars add just the right amount of cheery character to highlight the flowers in a gift arrangement for your friend, loved one, or perhaps just for yourself!

How to design a succulent garden for a frog, a chicken, and a fairy...

We had so much fun creating this custom dish garden for a customer who provided us with her frog, chicken, and fairy figurines! We created a suitable home that we think these miniature residents will enjoy, with peperomia, succulents, mosses, and a "pond" to keep them cool as the summer days heat up!

The chickens are free range...!

Summer fun!

Why is blue hydrangea such a summer favorite? Is it because it's so seasonally appropriate... or... maybe because it's the color of the beach?!

Valentine's Day: Think Beyond the Dozen Roses!

An edited version of this post appeared in print in the February issue of Newton Life Magazine.

Orange calla lilies, magenta orchids and pincushion protea complement dark red roses in this Bloomsbury Park design.

Long stemmed red roses are a Valentine’s Day tradition. But what if you want to truly surprise someone with an exciting twist on the classic custom?

As we prepare for Valentine’s Day here at Bloomsbury Park Flowers in Newton Centre, we’re recommending three modern upscale trends that will transform your flowers into a one-of-a-kind statement.

  1. Go compact and modern. Long stemmed roses are timeless. But a full and compact arrangement in a low distinctive vase becomes an opulent gem. One twist on this concept is a “rose hedge” – short cut stems arrayed upright together to give you the sense of having your own tabletop rose garden.
  2. Make a romantic ensemble. Roses are certainly romantic, but including other flowers can deliver a more unique message such as passion, fondness or flirtatiousness. Orchids and calla lilies complement roses perfectly with their posh ornamentation. And, pincushion protea – an exotic bloom – explodes with energy against the stately red rose.
  3. Be bold with color. Red evokes love and desire, but other palettes can be equally romantic. All-white bouquets are clean, sophisticated and elegant, and are suggestive of purity and perfection. Dark purple is another great choice for a sumptuous and extravagant arrangement that evokes royalty and luxury.

Remember that every love is unique – so don’t be afraid to think outside the dozen roses this coming Valentine’s Day.

Just add hot chocolate and marshmallows...

We can't believe that winter's here already! But just because nature is looking cold and bleak outside doesn't mean that winter arrangements can't warm your heart (awwww). Come check out the evergreens, berries, seasonal colored roses, gilded pine cones, glass ornaments and more that we're using to deck out our vases and bouquets this holiday season!

Wedding Bouquet Trends and Q&A with Pre-Dame!

Check out our Q&A with  Pre-Dame: A Beauty Guide for the Everyday Girl, where we talked about four different wedding design trends!

1) Pods and Foliage - Using pods in bridal bouquets has been a trend for a while now, including Eucalyptus, Lotus, and Scabiosa pods. In the summer time, Poppy pods are abundant at the market. This bouquet blends together Poppy pods and extra foliage for a natural, green style with some pops of color. The bouquet shown here includes Poppy pods, Eucalyptus, and Variegated Aspidistra with purple Roses and plum Dahlias. The bouquet has been wrapped in a simple plum-colored ribbon.

2) Airplants - Succulent plants have become increasingly popular at weddings. To take the trend a step further, brides are now including Airplants, like the Tillandsias seen in this bouquet. The silvery-green of the Tillandsias and Dusty Miller tone down the bright, warm hues of the Roses and Ranunculus. The bouquet is wrapped with both natural raffia and silver wire to give it a sense of bringing the old together with the new.

3) Gilded Accents - This bouquet is a current update on the classic all-white bouquet. Gold leaf florets are mixed among the ivory cabbage and ivory hybrid-tea roses. A soft gold sparkle dresses up the white hydrangea, and delicate gold-striped ribbon has been Roman-braided along the stems.

4) “Hand-Picked” Look - This trend continues to be popular with brides and is meant to appear as though the blooms have been freshly gathered from the field. This bouquet, which is both rustic and whimsical, includes Nigella, Astilbe, Mums, Anemones, Brunia, and Ruscus. Many brides are also asking for fresh herbs in their bouquets. This bouquet also includes “Mentha Jocka” -which gives it a wonderful, minty smell. Other herbs which brides are asking for include; Sage, Rosemary, Thyme, and Lavender. A loosely-tied double-looped bow finishes off this bouquet.

The Great Gatsby and Gorgeous Flowers

I finally saw the Great Gatsby film last night and thought it was pretty good! The sweeping views of fictional East and West Egg, detail-rich clothing and accessories, and the roar and indulgences of the jazz-age era, brought to life by director Baz Luhrmann, were all a sight to be seen. But, I have to say what got me really excited were the vast and ample displays of floral arrangements throughout the film! Apparently, I wasn't the only one who noticed either - a quick survey of other sites online proves that "Gatsby" is making an impression this year - in fashion and flowers! Below are some pics from the film! -Kayla
